The congregation is part of the Church of the Brethren, a denomination started in 1708 in Schwarzenau, Germany by a group of believers who wanted to take the bible to heart and live out fully the life that Jesus calls each one of us to live in His name.
For those first Brethren, that meant being re-baptized as adult believers in Jesus through full immersion baptism. Thus the name dunkers that many Brethren were known by, especially after their movement to the new world as they settled in Pennsylvania.
The strong belief in the bible and the desire to live daily as Jesus commands has led the Brethren to Another Way of Living, as we call it. This means that we seek to live everyday what we confess to believe on Sunday.
The Church of the Brethren is noted for being a denomination that lives out its faith simply and practically. That simple yet practical faith is what started organizations like Heifer Project and gave the inspiration for the beginnings of the Peace Corp.
