In the Church of the Brethren we believe in what is called "The Priesthood of all
Believers". Just as there are many gifts given for ministry there are many areas of
ministry at First Church of the Brethren. These ministries not only bring blessing to
many people, but give many opportunities to serve Jesus Christ. Following is just a
sample of the many areas that this congregation ministers to its members and the
community.
Worship - Through worship we connect with God in a way that allows communication
with our creator. It is a time to engage, uplift and challenge.
Education - Children as well as adults have many opportunities for Christian
education. Vacation Bible School is a favorite among many along with Sunday School
and Bible Study.
Praying - for all that we know. Including the neighborhood around the church, and
the larger community of Peoria
Caring - There are times in our lives when we need the help of another that is willing
to walk beside us. There are many ways this is done. Helping one another with
spiritual questions. Visiting with the home bound or those in the hospital and nursing
homes. The ministry of presence when people are hurting from loss of a loved one,
or suffering changes in life. These are all a part of the caring ministries of a Christ
centered church.
Missions and Outreach- The following are just some of the mission and outreach
ministries happening at First Church of the Brethren.
Garfield Primary School - being a peace partner in the "Peaceful Kingdom", and
providing school supplies and tutors.
Crop Walk - walking to raise money for local and world hunger.
Friendship House - Serving meals on the Fifth Sunday of months when that occurs.
Habitat for Humanity - Helping with projects that put local people in there own home.
Neighborhood Fall-Fest - Hosting a neighborhood fall gathering for our neighbors so
people can get to know one another and so we can get to know our neighbors.
Prayer walking Peoria - We walk the neighborhood surrounding the church, praying
for God's blessing and protection. This helps us to better understand the needs
around us, and puts us in a position to better minister to those around us.
Fellowship - This is a vital part of our life at First Church of the Brethren. We enjoy
being together, praying together, worshiping together and working together. We have
church picnics, bowling parties, bike rides, and many other gatherings throughout the
year.
